Modern Dance Tuesdays at 5:30

A modern dance class begins on Tuesday, September 23rd, at 5:30 pm, with Christine Poland. 

Christine Poland will be teaching a modern dance class for all levels teen to adult.  This class will begin with bartenieff fundamentals and floor barre exercises to stimulate the core without fighting gravity.  This leads to a simplistic center barre for the dancer to to find balance and agility.  The center barre is a combination of ballet and modern techniques such as Limon, Horton, and Graham.  Utilizing the space of the Dragon’s Egg we will experiment with combinations moving throughout the room.  Ms. Poland will be stressing form, space, momentum, and stillness to teach the dancers a wide range of movement.  Classes will be on Tuesdays from 5:30-6:30 September 23 thru October 28, 2014.



Christine Poland graduated with honors from Roger Williams University with a BA in Dance Performance Studies. In NYC she became a founding member and the managing director of Rocha Dance Theater. During her years with the company, Christine assisted the productions of “Gaining Voice”, “Ponder Me”, “Not so Soft”, “Painted Ladies” in NYC, RI, and Boston. Christine has performed with Sonia Plumb, Works/Laura Glenn, and Joseph Albano of Hartford, CT.  In 2005, she joined Heidi Latsky in Club Riot as “Valkeries”, at LaMama Experimental Theater. Christine has performed  for the following emerging choreographers:  Monica Bill Barnes, Mary Fullam, Full Force Dance Productions, Guta Hedwig, Noel MacDuffie, Oil and Water Productions, Vanessa Paige and Angela Jones. Original musical experience include: “Shirley and the Tropicana”, “Fishbowl”, “Her Mom’s Feet”, and “Queen Juniper”, directed by Christine Henry. She co-choreographed STUCK with Jenny, which was presented at Dancers Responding to Aids, Dixon Place, New Dance Group and Spoke the Hub from 2000 – 2003, Ms Poland was a guest choreographer for Creative Arts Studio in Brooklyn, NY. Her choreography has also been in a silent film short by Christian Zuccoro, Serenity. In 2005, Christine had the great pleasure of dancing as the evil seagull for Gary Shore of RI in Ode his silent dance film. She has performed and choreographed for Cornerstone Playhouse in Mystic, CT. With Cornerstone, she choreographed a children’s puppet show “Luna’s Sea”.  “Luna’s Sea” was performed at The Mystic Independent Theater in 2011 and the Natural Museum of American History in NYC May, 2012.  She had the great pleasure of choreographing an original musical “The Big Bank”, produced by Emerson Theater Collaborative in Mystic, CT.  Christine choreographed “A Funny Thing Happened On The Way To The Forum”, “Grease” and “Guys and Dolls”  for the US Coast Guard Academy.  She is currently on faculty at Kiks Dance Studio in Montville, CT and is a guest teaching artist at The Mystic Arts Center.  Christine has taught for the Dance Extension,  Creative Arts Program and The Writer’s Block.  She is know the Artistic Director and Founder of Mystic Moves Dance Theater, a modern dance company utilizing local performers of all levels and ages.
