Elaine has Danced On

My great good friend, Elaine Shipman, with whom I have shared joys and woes, love and life, these many years, died on March 16th, in NYC.  She was an ever rich presence as a choreographer, dancer, observor,  ever curious and engaged, ever bright and colourful in her comments, ever present.  I have danced with her for decades, differently in different times, and she has challenged and supported me, as I hope I have her, over this time.  She has been at the Dragon’s Egg as a regular dancer and inventor of dances.   We have all shared meals, conversation, laughter, surprise.

Her circle of friends is huge.  Many of us met under the amazing aegis of Merce Cunningham, and the tribe is strong.

I do know that this is the blessing of life, that we get it all, the brilliant moments of joy and the deep ones of sorrow.   I cannot wrap my mind around Elaine’s passing, yet know it to be so.   I offer a breath to you, one that brings in, lets go.

May we all be filled with peace, well being, and kindness.  May all beings be free.   namaste, marya
