A teacher of etiquette
up from Connecticut
came to a party as
Ichabod Crane

In a castle of vassals
Katrina Van Tassels
his hostess bewitched him
a tangle of pain

as he sought to be haughtier
Bram Bones, her courtier
found him ridiculous
laughed with disdain

So haughty and querulous
your road is perilous
heedless horse Hessians
will drive you insane

Here take this pumpkin
for use as a lantern
your road home is twisty
and dark in the rain

He fled from their brilliance
with inner resilience
hell bent to his future
as Ichabod Crane

Hastily saddled
directionless raddled
and galloping madly
he came to a bridge

Girding his pumpkin
with reins to his saddle
he flew in presumption
and crested the ridge

Riding still faster
avoiding disaster
suddenly everything
fell from his chest
his schoolteacher’s notes
fluttered loose from his vest
his reins and his traces
trailed into the brook
washed in the moonlight
new poems from his book
His hat with the plume
flew off of his head
he lifted up high
off his horse as it fled

He saw he was crumpled
a vanishing flash
his saddle left trampled
his pumpkin was smashed
