Black Wings Bloom (On an Ivory Sky)
Directed by Caitlin O’Connell
Written and performed by Shelley Fort
Caitlin and Shelley met at the National Theater Institute during a summer of NPC. Shelley went on to study at Brown/Trinity Rep as an actor and a year later, Caitlin joined her in the program as a director. They’ve seen each other’s work and watched each other grow exponentially! This collaboration comes after Caitlin directed a short play by Shelley titled, “Runaway” as a part of the Boudica Series at Urban Stages August ’16.
This is a segment of a recital Shelley wrote and performed at the end of her third year at Brown/Trinity Rep. The inspiration for this piece comes from growing up as a mixed-race baby (white mother, black father), the passing of her mother at age 12, and the pressure she felt as an artist to identify as one race in order to market herself as an actor.
