George White has died.

George White, the founder of the Eugene O’Neill Theatre Centre, died yesterday.

What a gift he has been to the theatre community, to blessing young or new playwrights with creative support, with extending theatre beyond our borders in so many ways.

I met George and Betsy in 1972, when I taught their younger son and tutored the older one.
I had also met them briefly in 1968, when I was at the American Dance Festival at Conn College, and went to a play at the O’Neill with Nathan Clarke.
Little did I know that we would then re meet in the city and would become friends.
They introduced me to Peter Nichols, my first husband and the father of my daughter, Ana.
Peter and I were married in their home in nyc in 1977.
Fast forward, Peter and I moved to Ct. I have been teaching at NTI since 1983.

George and Betsy have been so key and central to my life.

I send much love to Boomie, Juliette, and Caleb, and to all the family.
xox blessings and peace. marya
